Best Kept Arts & Entertainment Secrets
Shakespeare by the
Sea
 |
Lisa Coffi |
In 1998, Lisa Coffi had
a dream of a program like Shakespeare in the Park (Sacremento)
for the south bay area, centered in San Pedro area. But instead
of just dreaming, she decided to do something about it. She
cast about for sources of funding, hounded local sponsors,
asked for things impossible, and made it all happen. That
year, Shakespeare by the Sea was born. Opening July 23 at
8pm, Comedy of Errors played for three consecutive weeks in
Point Fermin Park, San Pedro. It was the first theatrical
production to be attempted in the space in over 20 years.
More than 3,000 people attended the production. “After
that,” she says matter-of-factly, “there was no
turning back.”
There are now about 30 women running Shakespeare by the Sea,
15 or so of them are Lisa Coffi.. The rest are a fireball
named Suzanne Dean. In the five years since, Shakespeare by
the Sea has grown phenomenally. Every summer they put on almost
two dozen performances from Manhattan Beach to Newport Beach.
Lucky us, for we reap the benefits of their passion for Shakespeare.
Between productions of Shakespeare by the Sea, Little Fish
Theatre Company and beyond, those of us from L.A. to Long
Beach to Orange County are treated to these wonderful theatrical
experiences.
